Course programme

Content

The course is devised to support the balance between the development of your practical skills and your vision as a designer. Emphasis lies in the design and practical aspects of creating settings for lens based media such as animation, film and television.

Course Highlights

  • From the beginning of the course and with increasing levels of creative finesse and technical accomplishment, students work within the context of both group and individual projects to examine the nature of film and television set design.
  • Commonalities and differences of designing for live performance and the camera are revealed through visits to theatres, film and television studios.
  • Visits and tutorial guidance from professional practitioners in the field.
  • This is the only BA (Hons) undergraduate course in London that specialises in Production Design for film and television.
  • The course is close to several major studios and has strong links to the main production colleges in London which provide practical experience and contacts with future producers, directors and cinematographers.
  • Course alumni maintain links and provide work experience.

Structure

Year 1: You will be introduced to and receive initial training in the necessary skills of interpretation, visualisation, technical drawing and model making. Wood, metal and computer inductions will broaden the range of media and skills that you can choose to work with. Alongside your studio practice you will also undertake a Contextual Studies programme coordinated across the School of Theatre.

Year 2: The course offers opportunities to study: film and stop-motion animation, set design, character design and miniature model making. You will be introduced to the importance of light and the camera's point of view. You will be encouraged to select and plan your final project of the year so that you may focus on areas the course offers that particularly interests you. The Contextual Studies programme continues preparing you for your dissertation. You will take an elective unit, selected from a broad range of options to enhance your core subject of study.

Year 3: Your final year of study is developed through a learning agreement that you negotiate with your tutors. This will allow you to develop in a way that maximises your skillbase, your vision and lets you prepare for a future of your choice. You will be supported through the year by a range of tutors who are active professionals. The final year of your Contextual Studies programme will culminate in your dissertation.
