The tobacconist is the person who works inside a tobacconist's shop and is, many times, also the owner of that shop. The tobacconist's is a shop where cigars, cigarettes and other tobaccos, lighting items such as matches and lighters, often salt and stamped values and sometimes also perfumery and stationery and gift items are sold. Over the years they have offered various goods; at the end of the nineteenth century the sale of state quinine was entrusted to tobacconists to put a stop to the spread of malaria. This prerogative continued until after the Second World War. Currently it is possible to buy many items, such as tobacco, kitchen salt, stamps, electronic stamps (former revenue stamps), telephone top-ups, stationery items, as well as bus tickets, and are assignees of Lotto betting offices. Thanks to the computer network of Lottomatica and other dealers such as SISAL, citizens are provided with services such as the payment of car tax, the Rai license fee or fines and utility bills in general. The owner of a tobacconist has, in principle, two different authorizations: authorization from the Autonomous Administration of State Monopolies (AAMS) for the resale of monopoly goods and municipal authorization for the retail trade of other goods other than those of monopoly (lighters, playing cards, some personal hygiene products, etc.).
