Towards Independence TyneMet
Study Level
Pre-entry. This course is suitable for people with profound and multiple learning difficulties and disabilities (also known as complex needs).

Course Content
Students work to individual targets based on their abilities, interests and needs to develop, extend and acquire communication skills. In many cases this will involve us learning about you and recording how you interact and effect your environment before setting challenges. There is a strong self advocacy theme to all of our delivery. Session titles include Communication, Accessing the Community, Drama, Yogacise (which includes opportunities to follow physiotherapy programmes) and Making Choices.
Why Tynemet
TyneMet has a long and well established track record of providing good quality provision for groups of people who have previously been excluded from general Further education provision.
Interesting Facts
This course was set up and named before the existence of the Towards Independence ASDAN accreditation with which we share a name!
Further Information
As people who enter this course will typically need support for personal care, additional social, educational and medical reasons it is essential that we have effective and well informed support in place BEFORE you enter the course. We invite interested people to attend a links course, and make home and school visits as part of our pre-entry procedures.
Assessment
Individuals are assessed against the adult pre-curriclum framework and also for distance travelled. We are more interested in you gaining as much independence as possible than in completing accreditation but there are opportunities to gain ASDAN Towards Independence certificates in appropriate areas.
Progression To
The majority of students exit to other adult services. To this end we run the course 10:00 to 1:00 for five days a week. This -mornings only†attendance makes it possible for students to gradually increase their use of adult day services. We actively support students in their transition after college.
