You will find out more about the lives of the names on your family tree. School records, Occupational records, newspapers and printed sources, Wills, Trade Directories and Electoral Rolls will be covered. Useful websites will also be explored. Practical workshop sessions in library will also be included to gain some practical research skills.

About this course
This course is for learners who have already done some work on their family tree and would like to find more about the lives of their ancestors.
Learners should have some information on their ancestors from certificates and Census returnsIt is recommended that you have the ESOL Skills for Life Entry Level 3 Certificate or a good level of numeracy and literacy – as you will need to read handouts and produce a portfolio of work. You should also be dexterous (able to hold and use equipment). Keyboard skills are also useful.

How will I learn?
By a variety of teaching and learning approaches, including individual tuition and support, group work, independent research, lectures, examination of examples and resources and internet demonstrations.
How will my progress be monitored and assessed?
Continuous assessment by the tutor. There is no formal, external assessment for this course.

What equipment or materials will I need to provide?
Pen, paper and file. There will be an opportunity to look at your own family history material so any information you have will be useful. Your tutor will advise on this as the course progresses. There are some costs involved in obtaining records as part of your own research such as fees for birth, marriage and death certificates (approx £10 per certificate).
What other support is available?
Help with numeracy or literacy is available. ICT drop-in sessions are available during term time and open to all learners. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Learner Support Funding is available for equipment, childcare and travel to learners who qualify.
