Course programme

Modules Stage one Compulsory modules

All candidates take the following compulsory modules:

  • CHN7003 Translating I
  • CHN7010 Simultaneous Interpreting I
  • CHN7015 Sight Translation Exercise
  • CHN7016 Consecutive Interpreting I
  • SML7000 Information Technology for Translators and Interpreters
  • SML7001 Translation Studies I
Optional modules

You will take optional modules to a value of 20 credits from available modules within the University, with the agreement of the Degree Programme Director. These may include the following:

  • LAW8049 Key Concepts in Corporate and Commercial Law
  • SML8018 Translating for the European Union's Institutions
Stage two Compulsory modules
  • SML8009 Research Methods in Translating and Interpreting
  • SML8023 Profession, Processes and Society in Translating and Interpreting

You will take one of the following two modules:

  • CHN8030 Specialised Translation: Chinese to English
  • CHN8031 Specialised Translation: English to Chinese

You will also take one of the following two modules:

  • SML8098 Dissertation
  • SML8099 Translating/Interpreting Project
Optional modules

You will take a further 70 credits from the following, to bring the total number of credits to 180:

  • CHN8029 English-Chinese Subtitle Translation
  • CHN8032 Public Service Interpreting
  • CHN8033 Drama Translation for Translators and Interpreters
  • SML8004 Literary Translation
  • LAW8049 Key Concepts in Corporate and Commercial Law
  • SML8018 Translating for the European Union's Institutions

With the approval of the Degree Programme Director and depending on your academic background, alternative optional modules may be available.

Modules may change for your year of entry.


Entry Requirements Stage one entry
  • 2:1 honours degree
    OR
  • a degree with a minimum average of 75% (or GPA 2.75) on your transcript.

Native English speaking applicants to have good degree-level knowledge of Chinese. When applying, please enclose any evidence you may have to support your second language proficiency qualification. We will also consider your application if you have lower or non-standard qualifications and at least two years' full-time experience as a translator or an interpreter.

If your first language is not English you need IELTS 7.0, with a minimum of 6.5 in speaking and writing and 6.0 in listening and reading. This qualification must be no more than two years old on starting the course. No other English language qualifications are accepted.

If you meet the entry requirements for this stage one, you will be registered on the Translating and Interpreting MA. If you complete this stage, you will take one of the suitable stage two pathways. The choice of pathway is according to your academic results and your personal preferences.

If you leave the MA after successfully completing stage one, you will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Translating and Interpreting.

Stage two entry (advanced)
  • 2:1 honours degree
    OR
  • a degree with a minimum average of 80% (or GPA 3.0) on your transcript.

You must also have expert second-language knowledge.

International students

If your first language is not English you need IELTS 7.5 with a minimum of 7.0 in all sub-sections. This qualification must be no more than two years old when you start the course. No other English language qualifications are accepted.

If you leave the MA after successfully completing stage two, without proceeding to a dissertation or project, you will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Translating Studies.
