You will look at recent developments in this dynamic industry and how they affect the products and services they provide. Marketing and the production of promotional materials all play a part as well as the necessity to provide excellent customer service.

You will study 6 units:
  • § Introduction to the UK travel and tourism Industry
This unit is designed to help understand the importance of the travel and tourism industry in today's society. You will study the many organisations in the industry and also the historical events that have shaped it. You will learn to understand the legislation and issues that have affected, and continue to affect, this ever

changing industry, and how organisations have tried to overcome these problems.
  • § UK travel and tourism destinations
Knowledge of the UK and being able to locate key tourist destinations and transport gateways is the starting point for this unit. You will use a wide range of reference materials and information sources and from this you will be able to plan journeys using different methods of transport.
  • § Exploring customer service in the travel and tourism industry
In this unit you will find out why customer service is so important in the travel and tourism industry. You will also practice the skills needed for giving customer service.
  • § European holiday destinations
In this unit you will be looking at the diverse destinations which cater for a range of tastes and customer needs in Europe. These range from fun holidays in the sun to fashionable ski resorts and informal camping holidays.
  • § Exploring marketing in the travel and tourism industry
This unit will introduce you to the principles of marketing and how they are used in travel and tourism organisations to meet customer needs. You will investigate the range of travel and tourism products made available by the industry. It will also provide an opportunity for you to explore how market research is used by the industry.
  • § Planning visits for travel and tourism
This unit will give you the opportunity to experience, at first hand, components of the travel and tourism industry within a destination or attraction, and utilise a range of teamwork and personal skills. This unit is likely to take the form of a residential study visit.

Additional Opportunities
Learners will have the opportunity to gain other qualifications such as English Speaking Board Certificate which will give you the confidence to speak in front of an audience and Worldwide Travel Destinations. As part of the course, learners will be required to participate in compulsory study visits and purchase a College polo shirt / t shirt. These costs will be confirmed at interview.

Assessment
Assessments are mostly internally assessed by the course tutors and learners will be required to keep a Portfolio of Evidence of work. Some additional qualifications are externally set exams and are open book. The method of learning is a mixture of both tutor led and practical sessions and learners are required to fully participate in both classroom based and scenario based activities. Btec First programmes are assessed by completing a range of coursework set throughout the year.

Progression
Upon successful completion, this course will lead to the BTEC National Certificate in Travel and Tourism or into employment in a variety of sectors such as travel agencies, tourist attractions, hotels and theme parks.
