About this course


Show a critical understanding of among and within species variation in silvicultural characteristics, the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils, and the relevance of these to the process of matching species to site.

Discuss in detail a variety silvicultural practices and evaluate their suitability and effectiveness in managing trees, woodlands and forests for different objectives.

Discuss the concept of silvicultural systems, and evaluate the use and relative merits of a variety of silvicultural systems.

Identify specific silvicultural actions for achieving management objectives and delivering ecosystem services from specific tree, woodland or forest situations now and in the future.



Only international students who have been awarded a CSC scholarship are eligible to study on this course.

Applicants are expected to have at least an upper second class degree in a relevant subject (forestry, conservation, land management, natural sciences, economics). Candidates with lower qualifications (e.g. lower second class degree or professional qualifications) who have sufficient, relevant work experience may also be considered.

Course programme

The School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography offers a postgraduate distance learning course in Tropical Forestry, which is aimed specifically at international students who have been awarded a scholarship by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC). We have secured CSC scholarships for 2016 entry. Up to 10 scholarships are available for applicants from the following developing commonwealth countries to study for our MSc Tropical Forestry by distance learning: Bangladesh, Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
