This course will enable nurses, whose registration has lapsed, to return to the NMC register and practice as a registered nurse following successful completion of the course in both academic work and practice placements.

We offer opportunities to return to nursing practice in the fields of Adult, Mental Health, Learning Disability, Child, and General Practice Nursing, through the completion of a single academic module together with a clinical placement. This has been developed in line with Return to Practice Standards (NMC, 2019) and in consultation with practice partners from our local NHS Trusts. The module is normally delivered over a maximum period of eight months, with typical learning activities including face-to-face contact, skills sessions, on-line learning and practice-based learning to meet a set of proficiencies.

The Return to Practice (Nursing) programme will also help you plan your future learning to further develop your career.

Course programme

Module: 6NH082

Credits: 20

Period: 1

Type: Core

Locations: Walsall Campus

The aim of this module is to enable nurses (Adult, Child, Learning Disability , Mental health and General Practice), whose Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration has lapsed (practised fewer than 750 hours in the previous five years, or 450 hours in the three years before application for readmission to the register), to meet the NMC regulatory requirements for renewal of registration and re-entry to the register. This module also aims to enable you to practise safely and effectively as a nurse without the need for direct supervision in accordance with the NMC Code (2018), the Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses (NMC, 2018) and the Return to Practice Standards (NMC, 2019). You will be able to effectively apply the evidence base for your practice in the current health and social care settings. Through critical reflection on your own role and development, you will synthesise and evaluate ways in which you can improve the quality of individualised, holistic nursing care.

  • Nursing is an exciting and developing profession that you will have previously enjoyed, and this course will provide a broad-based update on essential subjects that will allow you to continue your career in nursing.

  • If you have been a previously Registered Nurse on any part of the current or former Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or UKCC Register, this course will enable you to re-register and return to nursing practice.

  • Whether you have been out of practice for a long period of time, or have had a career break, you are welcome to apply for this course and there is no upper age limit.
