With a minor in lesbian, gay, bisexual, & transgender (LGBT) studies, you’ll study sexuality and its importance to the organization of social relations, political formations, expressive behavior and aesthetic categories. You’ll focus on the representations and lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered subjects, even as these subjects remain stubbornly and productively difficult to define once and for all. LGBT Studies is an interdisciplinary program, and it is likewise open to a variety of perspectives on the stability of the constituent identity categories at its center.

Undergraduate students in any college at Cornell may minor in LGBT Studies in conjunction with a major defined elsewhere in the university. The minor attracts students from a variety of disciplines including, but not limited to: English, Performing and Media Arts, Biological Sciences, and Anthropology.

The undergraduate minor consists of four courses chosen from the links below. Course offerings change annually, so students must consult the list of offerings each year to see whether a specific course will count toward the minor. Students may petition the Director of LGBT Studies for courses not listed.

For more detailed information please review the undergraduate minor application.

The LGBT Studies graduate minor attracts students from humanities fields such as English, Romance Studies and Theatre Arts, to name a few.

In order to pursue a graduate minor in LGBT Studies, a student must currently be associated with a degree program in the Cornell Graduate School and choose a faculty member from the LGBT Studies Graduate Field to be on their special committee. In keeping with the aim of flexibility in graduate degree programs, the minor in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Studies is developed by the student in consultation with their LGBT Studies graduate field member. There are no required courses for the LGBT Studies graduate minor, progress in and completion of the minor is the sole responsibility of the student and their committee member.
