LASP welcomes Cornell undergraduates and graduates in all fields of study who are interested in studying and conducting research in Latin America or the Caribbean, to apply for the LASP Minor.

In today’s global economy, an ability to demonstrate knowledge of languages and cultures outside of the United States is an important qualification when seeking employment. The LASP minor will appear on your undergraduate transcript and you will receive a certificate from the program.

The undergraduate minor in Latin American Studies is earned by completeing the following requirements:

Proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese can be demonstrated in one of the two ways:

1. Native speaker of Spanish or Portuguese determined by a Romance Studies Department language proficiency test (*language proficiency tests are only available at the beginning of each semester, please plan accordingly);

2. Successful completion of SPAN 2000 / PORT 2190 or any other higher level (2000 or above) Spanish or Portuguese language course.

El estudiante tiene que demostrar suficiencia en español o portugués en una de las siguientes maneras:

In addition to the language requirement, minor candidates must complete a minimum of 15 credits in approved Latin American Studies Elective courses (listed as LATA in the Cornell Course Catalog). Students must earn a B in these courses.

1. Selected courses must represent at least 2 different departments.

2. Students must complete at least 1 advanced level course in Latin American Studies (3000-4000 level)

The graduate minor in Latin American Studies is earned by completing the following requirements:

1. The graduate student should select a member of the Graduate Field in Latin American Studies to serve on their special committee. To find the selection of LASP Graduate Field Members, click here.

2. Graduate students must comply with the Graduate School's Code of Legislation.

3. The graduate student must complete the Graduate Concentration Application form (available on the Latin American Studies Program website).
