About this course
There are no formal entry requirements, but you will need some intermediate ICT qualification and/or experience. You must be aged 19 or over and have a keen interest in Information Communication Technology and be motivated enough to study by distance learning.

Introduction:
This programme is designed for adults returning to education after a career break, or as a progression route to a foundation or honours degree. It is suitable for people who use IT as part of their job, but who have no formal IT qualification. As the programme is franchised from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) you will enrol at both Preston College and UCLan, and have access to both Preston College and UCLan`s facilities, including UCLan`s library and student union.
The module is studied via distance learning, with all study materials available on-line. Tutorial sessions will be held at Preston College`s Fulwood Campus for those wishing to access tutor support.
Study Mode & Location:
The module (studied flexibly by distance learning), should be completed within an acdemic year or less.
Course Content:
You will study:
Document Preparation & Word Processing
Produce professional-looking documents. Work step-by-step through the various stages of:
- designing and creating layouts.
- combining graphics and text.
- making the fullest use of the software available.
Spreadsheet Applications
Discover how appropriate use of information technology can help you communicate useful information about data you have obtained. Take real data that you have obtained and use it to produce interesting and informative reports. You will be able to use the Excel package to:
- obtain data from original sources.
- enter the data into a spreadsheet.
- edit and correct data.
- perform elementary analysis involving applying formulae.
- obtain formatted printout and graphical output.
- use built-in functions.
Presentation Software
Gain an appreciation of communication through presentation software and acquire skills in achieving this.You will be able to use the Powerpoint package to:
- determine when PowerPoint communication will be beneficial.
- input and edit text and graphics.
- obtain printed output on paper.
Assessment:
This module has four pieces of assessed coursework and a portfolio.
Careers & Progression Opportunities:
The programme will develop your skills so that you will be better equipped to use IT in the workplace or home. Once you have completed this University Certificate, you may wish to continue your studies to acheive the Office Proffessional or Advanced University Certificate in ICT. Alternatively, this module is part of a Foundation Degree in ICT and you may wish to use this module to gain credit towards this qualification.
