What you will study

You will study modules such as:

Architectural CAD (20 credits)

Traditional design environments engage conventional drafting techniques to relay thoughts and ideas into reality, requiring competent personnel with considerable drafting experience. Any revisions have to be manually amended which impose constraints on resources (specifically time). The emergence of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) packages has revolutionised the way designs are transformed into reality, significantly improving efficiency in terms of editing, revising and exchanging drawing information.

This module invites you to prepare, modify and enhance designs using CAD software as the principal platform. You will be able to explore various features and functions of 2D and 3D CAD software and apply them in the design process. It further provides you with an introduction to the BIM based computer software as an aid to design in the built environment industry.

BIM and Project Collaboration (20 credits)

The emergence of Building Information Modelling (BIM) has revolutionised the way that designs are procured into reality. The evolution was even more significant in the architecture and construction industry, where simple two dimensional drafting programs have been developed into integrated 3D building information modelling (BIM) applications, tracking building information throughout its lifecycle, from its conception to the end of life demolition.

This powerful and flexible medium offers novel means to create, modify, collaborate, procure and present fully coordinated project design information. This module extends the skills and competencies gained in the CAD architecture module and enables you to prepare, modify and enhance detailed designs using BIM as the principal design platform.

BIM and Design Visualisation (20 credits)

Unprecedented levels of the interest have been shown in the digital multimedia technologies that provide rich and highly interactive medium in which designs, ideas and information can be visualised, communicated, shared and presented. Many organisations are increasingly using these technologies in preference to conventional techniques, both for design collaboration and presentation and for promoting their products and services.

The aim of this module is to develop your skills in application of digital multimedia technologies for visualisation, communication and presentation of designs and ideas in creative and innovative manner. It further aims to equip you with knowledge of planning for acquisition, synthesis, manipulation and seamless integration of digital information within the multimedia environment. This digital information could be text, digital images, drawings, rendered images and animations created in CAD environments, video and sound.
