VAT Compliance Diploma

Course material

LexisNexis Tolley Tax Training (LNB) offer a VAT Diploma study manual, VAT legislation and a student support line.

The written material is also supported by our audio visual "Tax Tutor" CD ROM offering. The VAT module of "Tax Tutor" provides an audio visual lecture for each of the chapters within the manual.

When enrolling with LNB students will be sent their manual, together with their audio visual CD ROM. Students will also be able to purchase Tolley's Orange Tax Handbook at a discounted student price.

Modular Tests

The chapters in our study manual are split into four modules:
Module A - CHAPTERS 1 to 9
Module B - CHAPTERS 10 to 21
Module C - CHAPTERS 22 to 27
Module D - CHAPTERS 28 to 32

For each Module there is an online multiple choice test. The student will need a unique password to access the test. Once students have registered with the Institute they will be e-mailed their unique password and additional information. Please allow 5 to 7 working days after you have registered to receive your password.

After studying the chapters within a particular module the student will have the technical knowledge to attempt the modular test.

We recommend the student study the modules in the correct order and only proceed to the next module once they have successfully completed the online test of the module they have been studying.

Each modular test will be one hour in duration and will comprise 30 multiple choice questions. The questions will only test the material contained within the chapters for the module being examined. It is important that the student allocate an uninterrupted one hour to the test as they will be timed out at the end of the hour.

To pass a modular test the student needs to get 18 out of the 30 questions correct. At the end of the hour test the computer will calculate their mark and inform them whether they have been successful.

Students will not be told which questions they have got right - they either pass or fail.

Successful candidates will then be able to print out a "Module Completion" statement. The computer will also notify the Institute of a students success.

If the student fails to achieve the required mark we recommend they revisit their study manual and consolidate their knowledge further. Students may take a modular test as many times as they wish but not within 4 weeks of an unsuccessful attempt.

The 30 questions are taken randomly from a bank of 60 questions. Consequently if they have to sit the test a second time it will be quite different to their first attempt.

The Diploma Exam

After successful completion of all four modular tests the student will be able to sit the final Diploma exam.

An exam entry fee of £25 is charged by the Institute to give students access to the final Diploma exam. Students should contact the Institute to arrange payment prior to sitting the final exam.

The final exam is an online multiple choice exam. The student will need their password to access the examination. The password will only access the final exam if they have successfully completed the four modular tests and paid the Institutes exam entry fee.

The Diploma exam will be 90 minutes in duration and will comprise 45 multiple choice questions. The questions can cover any of the material examined within the previous four modules. It is important that the student allocate an uninterrupted 90 minutes to the examination as they will be timed out at the end of the 90 minutes.

To pass the Diploma exam the student will need to get 30 out of the 45 questions correct. At the end of the 90 minutes examination the computer will calculate their mark and inform the student whether they have been successful.

Students will not be told which questions they have got right - they either pass or fail.

Successful candidates will then be able to print out a "Diploma Completion" statement. The computer will also notify the Institute of a students success. The Diploma Completion statement can then be submitted to the Institute for formal recognition of success. The Institute will then issue the successful candidate with a formal VAT Compliance Diploma certificate.

If a student fails to achieve the required mark in the Diploma exam we recommend they revisit their study manual and consolidate their knowledge further. After an unsuccessful attempt, you will need to wait 4 weeks to re-take the exam.

They may only take the Diploma exam three times and these must be within two years of passing the fourth modular test.

Please note, the diploma will be valid for two years. After this period you will need to liaise with the Institute to apply for a renewal. At this time, you will need to confirm that you have kept up-to-date with your CPD requirement. This is done through an online test accessible using the exam centre and your login details as used previously. The Institute will inform you of your need to take the online test roughly 2 months before your renewal is due.

The exam entry fee of £25 covers the first and any subsequent sittings of the Diploma exam. Consequently students will only be required to pay one fee of £25 regardless of the number of attempts they have at the Diploma exam.

The 45 questions are taken randomly from a bank of 90 questions. Consequently if a student has to sit the exam a second time it will be quite different to their first attempt.
