The course This degree is only for currently qualified veterinary nurses who wish to 'top-up' their vocational qualification to an honours degree. As many potential applicants will be working full or part-time, this degree will be delivered by blended learning – a combination of short (one or two day) periods of attendance at Harper Adams and distance learning. Although it is the equivalent of two full-time academic years, it is anticipated that most students will study on a part-time basis and extend the period of study up to five years. In the early part of the course some modules are core; these are both essential study areas and modules appropriate to higher level education. Optional modules are available in both year levels to allow you to explore special interest areas and give you the opportunity to gain extra skills. The first 120 credits plus an integrated assignment can lead to the RCVS Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Dip AVN). Work placement No formal placement time is required for the honours degree, but some time in appropriate practice will be needed to qualify for the Dip AVN. Careers An honours degree can help you become a better nurse, introduce you to veterinary practice management or give wider career opportunities.

Teaching and learningModules are delivered by blended learning; this is a combination of distance learning, supported by traditional paper and library resources and the Learning Hub virtual learning environment, and one/two day blocks of seminars, practicals and guest speakers at Harper Adams. Attendance is not a requirement, but students find them stimulating, both for the content and the chance to meet and discuss issues with the staff and their fellow students face-to-face.

Assessment methodsA wide range of assessment methods are used, including practical exams, assignments, case-study based assessments, presentations and traditional exams. An emphasis is always on the ability to apply new knowledge and understanding to practical or professional practice.
