Extend learning and the application of knowledge of an interesting period in British History focusing on areas of major concern and how they have changed and adapted during the time span (1837 – 1901). We will also focus on novel and unique issues and ideas to expand our learning including hidden/secretive aspects, for example, poetry, music, the media and the new mix of people arriving on our shores during the Victorian period.

The course is for people who have an interest, enthusiasm and a desire to learn more about Victorian society and the impact of social, economic, industrial and recreational change during the period.

Help with numeracy or literacy is available. ICT drop-in sessions are available during term time and are open to all learners. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Learner Support Funding is available for equipment, childcare and travel to learners who qualify. Victorian Art and Literature – a historical appraisal to include the works of Dickens, Bronte etc

The state of health and hygiene – conditions, diseases and other associated issues and the various remedies and improvements during the Victorian period

Recreation and Leisure – the various pastimes, sports and entertainment enjoyed during the era

The Railways – a major step forward showing growth, development and a changing society

An insight into life in the North East – an examination of the Gazettes/advertisements of North East of England

The growth of towns – the impact of population expansion, immigration, industry etc
