This is the only programme in Scandinavia that offers a specialisation in Old Norse and Celtic philology supplemented by optional interdisciplinary studies. The aim of the programme is to provide a deeper understanding of the Nordic Viking Age and Medieval times and the neighbouring Celtic culture. This should be accomplished through in-depth studies of literary sources (texts) and historical objects.

About this course

has advanced knowledge within Viking and/or medieval studies with emphasis on one or more of the following disciplines:
history
art history
history of religion
archaeology
philology
cultural history
has a special knowledge of theories and methods related to interdisciplinary research.
knows the history of research and has a good grasp on the relevant source categories and reference literature related to the study of medieval communication in Scandinavia.
has a thorough knowledge about how texts and artefacts interact as means of communication in the Scandinavian Middel Ages.
has an analytic perception of theoretical discussions about medieval communication; in particular discussions about the concept of “text” and how this concept relates to oral and written transmission.
knows how to apply the aquired theoretical knowledge to other academic fields where communication is the issue.
can analyze and deal critically with various sources of medieval communication, contextualize these sources and use them to formulate scholarly arguments about Scandinavian medieval mentality.
has aquired a critical approach to existing theories and methods applied on medieval communication; in particular issues related to the concept of literacy, New Philology and transmission of texts.
knows how to work independently with theoretical problems and how to apply these to theoretical and practical questions connected to texts and text transmission.
can under supervision carry out an independent, limited, cross disciplinary research project about medieval verbal and non-verbal communication in accordance with applicable norms for research ethics.

Course programme

Programme structure

This Master's degree programme is a two year programme consisting of a total of 120 ECTS credits.

The first two semesters

During both the first and the second semester all students will each semester take three courses each worth 10 ECTS credits. During the first semester it is compulsory to take VMS4100 – Philological theory and Method. Students who have not taken NFI1101 – Norrøn grammatikk og eldre språkhistorie, or an equivalent course, must also take NFI4120 – Old Norse - language and texts during the first semester. VMS4200 – Philology in an interdisciplinary perspective is compulsory the second semester. The remaining courses can be chosen from the optional courses listed below. Students planning to write their thesis within the field of Old Norse or Celtic Philology are strongly recommended to take certain courses.
