Why study this course In the Foundation year you will study three days per week. The focus will be on academic writing skills and numeracy, plus subject-specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree. Although commercial animation may predominantly be a digital medium, the underlying approach in the BA (Hons) Animation course is to understand animation in the context of its origins in Art & Design. A significant emphasis of the curriculum therefore is placed on acquiring the fundamental practical principles of animation through drawing and story telling – narrative.

Skills and experience gained During the course you will: Benefit from experience working on both individual and group projects, gain specialist and transferable skills enabling you to work in a variety of mediums, work in our state-of-the-art multi-million pound Media Arts Centre, which houses computer suites and studios for animation. You will develop practical skills across a range of traditional and contemporary animation practice, learn from specialist, traditionally and digitally trained staff, with the opportunity to have regular one-to-one contact focusing on your personal creative development. Animation is an intensive, mainly studio-based practice. Drawing is an essential skill underpinning the learning of all forms of animation. The emphasis is on developing a strong technical and personal approach to drawing and story-telling. Art and film theory are central to developing students as both independent and commercial animators.You will work on a range of individual and group projects. Animation is treated as an art form as well as an entertainment medium. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with other disciplines, including Interior Design and Music Technology. Careers development is integrated into the course and the course seeks to provide you with an awareness of the realworld context of the creative industries in general and Animation in particular. You will be helped to develop a strategy for obtaining appropriate employment at the end of your course. Professional practice will be emphasised as part of all learning units but a work-related learning unit especially will help you to become more focused on managing your career.
