The War Studies & Philosophy BA joint honours degree is an interdepartmental course that addresses key elements of war in a philosophical context by introducing strategic concepts, arguments, texts and techniques from across the philosophical spectrum.
The War Studies & Philosophy BA degree comprises a total of 360 credits studied over three years. You will divide your study time equally between the two subjects and will usually take modules totalling 120 credits each year.

In your first and second year, you will study a combination of required and optional modules from both subject areas. Your final year will involve you writing a 10,000-word dissertation in either subject area. In addition you will study a range of optional modules to bring your total credits for War Studies and Philosophy to 60 in each subject (including the dissertation).

Please note that A-level General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills and Global Perspectives are not accepted by King's as one of your A-levels. However, if offered the grade achieved may be taken into account when considering whether or not to accept a candidate who has just fallen short of the conditions of their offer.

Course programme

1st Year

Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.

You will take 60 credits from War Studies and 60 credits from Philosophy.

War Studies:

You are required to take the following modules:

  • Contemporary Security Issues (15 credits)

Philosophy:

You are required to take 60 credits from the below listed modules. One module must be selected from each group. All modules are taught across one semester.

  • Ethics I (15 credits) OR
  • Political Philosophy I (15 credits)

List C

  • Epistemology I (15 credits) OR
  • Elementary Logic (15 credits) OR
  • Mataphysics I (15 credits) OR
  • Methodology (15 credits)

One further module may be chosen from any of the above three groups.

Optional Modules

War Studies:

In addition, you will take 30 credits from a range of optional modules that may typically include:

  • The Causes of War (30 Credits)
  • The Conduct of War (30 Credits)
  • The Experience of War (30 Credits)

Philosophy:

There are no optional modules.

2rn Year

You will take 60 credits from War Studies and 60 credits from Philosophy.

You are required to take one of the following modules:

  • World War II in Europe and War in International Order (30 credits)
  • War in International Order (30 credits)

Philosophy

You are required to take 60 credits. Three modules are required from at least two of the below A-C groups. Modules may typically include:

Required Modules

You are required to take the following module:

  • Dissertation (you are required to complete a dissertation worth 30 credits in either the Department of War Studies or the Department of Philosophy)

If you write your dissertation in Philosophy you will need to choose an optional module/s adding up to 30 credits in Philosophy and 60 credits in War Studies. If you write your dissertation in War Studies you will choose optional modules adding up to 30 credits in War Studies and 60 credits in Philosophy.

In addition, you are required to take sufficient credits to bring your total for the year to 120 credits, 60 from War Studies and 60 from Philosophy.
