By jailer is meant properly the assistant of the custodian in prisons, a term officially replaced with a custodial officer or prison police officer. The Corps of custodial agents was a military body of the Kingdom of Italy and then of the Italian Republic active from 1890 to 1990 with the task of keeping Italian prisons safe. The body, originally a civil system, depended on the Ministry of the Interior, but in 1922 the competence passed to the Ministry of Justice. Militarized in 1945, it was suppressed in 1990 and reformed into the Penitentiary Police Corps, restoring the previous civil system. The Corps of Prison Guards, established by the regulation of 1873, was reformed by the Royal Decree of 6 July 1890, n. 7011, who established the Corps of custodians.
