Course programme

Whether you are Welsh and want to claim what is rightfully yours or whether you want to enhance the quality of your experience at university in Aberystwyth, the learning of Welsh can be a truly satisfying experience for you.

Level 1

The Beginners’ scheme is intended mainly for those with no previous knowledge of the language. It is aimed at giving students a command of the main elements of oral Welsh, with some reference to literary history and literary forms. Beginners may take Level 1 simply as a one-year scheme, and as a possible option in their Part 1 combination. They may on the other hand wish to think of it as an introduction to a degree in Welsh (Second Language) or Celtic Studies (four-year schemes).

These students join the Level 1 Welsh (Second Language) scheme during the second year. An intensive Summer course, which counts towards credits in the following year provides a unique opportunity for consolidating the year’s work and ensuring lasting communicative competence. Grants may be available towards the cost of this course.

Having successfully completed the second language modules, students are then qualified to go on to Level 2 and continue with their studies alongside other students who entered college already having fluency in Welsh. Students are free to choose from a broad range of subjects, be they linguistic or literary, or a combination of both.
