Course programme



Course Objectives:-
  • Basic construction, names of components and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges
  • Use of the operator?s handbook, etc
  • Pre-use, start, running checks and close-down procedure
  • Preparing the excavator for site and road travel
  • Travelling the excavator over differing types of terrain, including rough, undulating ground and up and down substantial inclines
  • Manoeuvring, progressing to confined spaces in a forward and reverse direction
  • Positioning and setting the machine to excavate
  • Precautions and actions for underground and overhead services and other hazards
  • Soil and material characteristics
  • Excavating below ground lever
  • Loading vehicles and hoppers
  • Backfilling, grading, spreading and levelling different types of terrain
  • How to remove and re-attach different buckets
  • Placing the excavator in an out-of-service condition
  • Loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter
  • Trained operator achievement test

Duration: Novice - Ten days; Experienced - One day worker assessment

Optional Follow-up courses: Manual Handling ? First Aid ? Other Plant & Machinery ? NVQ Level 2 in Plant & Machinery ? Red Card Operators must complete 300 hours per module and complete the NVQ within 12 months to obtain the Blue Competence Card
