To provide selected delegates with underpinning knowledge and practical ability to operate skid steer loading shovels safely within their working environment and to have successfully undertaken and passed the appropriate operator tests in accordance with an accrediting body recognised by the HSE, e.g. ITSSAR etc. Suitable for: Refresher / Persons with experience and trained. Those who have, or are required to have 'hands on' knowledge and responsibilities involving the safe use of 'skid steer loading shovels' used within their workplace environment.

Aim

Course Content / Aims and Objectives – Theory and Practical Skill Instruction
- Trainees will have an understanding of course aims and objectives.
- Have a clear understanding of their responsibilities under Health and Safety Law and other relevant legislation.
- Trainees will have an understanding of the safety rules applicable to operating wheeled loading shovels within their workplace.
- Introduction to the machine, characteristics of the main components etc.
- Stability triangle.
- Rated capacity.
- Bucket types and use.
- Factors effecting stability and in-stability (un-laden & laden).
- Control(s) familiarisation and their functions.
- Daily pre-use checks, shutdown and re-fuelling procedures.
- Preparing the loading shovel for site and road travel.
- Travelling the machine over differing types of terrain, including rough undulating ground and substantial inclines, both in the loaded and unloaded state.
- Precautions regarding underground and overhead services.
- How to excavate from embankments of different materials etc and stockpiles.
- Vehicle and hopper loading etc.
- Backfilling spread and level various materials.
- Attachments (if applicable)
- Driving and steering exercises, un-laden and laden.
- Occupational dermatitis.
- Pre-use checks test.
- Multi and Open choice theory test.
- Practical test.
Instructors
Courses are carried out by our fully trained and accredited instructors and the training will be of a high quality standard throughout.
Location of Training
Training can be delivered on-site and off-site depending on customer requirements; training delivered off-site will be more advantageous to the trainees as the training can be specific to their workplace activities.
Equipment
Must be in sound working order, efficient state and of good repair when being used for training off-site and to be made available when required for the practical aspects of the training, ideally in an area away from the normal day to day work activities.
Achievement Measurement
The training is carried out in accordance with ITSSAR Accredited Standards and includes both theory and practical assessments leading to a nationally recognised qualification on successful completion as endorsed by the Health & Safety Executive.
