The Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) program at Acadia emphasizes the importance of gender as a category of critical analysis in areas such as scholarly activity, education, social relationships, cultural expression, and politics. Women’s and Gender Studies is offered as a major and honours in the Faculty of Arts, and students from all faculties can minor in WGS or pursue it as a second major. There are four core courses, with the rest of the program chosen from cross-listed courses offered in all three faculties on a rotational basis. This means that you will have the opportunity of taking courses from a range of different disciplines, all chosen for their inclusion of themes and issues related to women and/or gender.

In addition to providing students with a well-rounded education and critical thinking, reading and writing skills, there are many careers that rely on a solid understanding of women and gender. For instance, you could work for a non-profit organization raising money for women’s causes, counsel women at a domestic violence shelter, organize for gay rights, work on equity issues for the government, address issues of work-family balance in human resources at a company, teach, act, and even paint! There are a huge number of fields for which understanding the complexity of gender is essential. If you are interested in teaching, women’s and gender studies is considered a prerequisite for family studies in some provinces.
