WOOD CARVING
Tutor: ANTHONY GRIFFITHS

Course Outline:
Learn the intimate art of woodcarving. The course welcomes beginners and those with some experience.
The aim of this course is to complete a carving in wood in 4 days, either in relief form (from a flat plank) or in the round, three dimensional. The course will provide opportunities for you to develop an awareness of the design process and an understanding of wood, woodcarving techniques and woodcarving tools.

Day 1: Arrive by 9.45am for tea/coffee. 10.00am start with introductory talk: The different approaches to woodcarving - preparation and getting started and the safe use of tools. You may work from your sketches, making a simple clay model or directly carving -in which case the subject may be suggested by the shape and form of the wood. Commence carving.
Day 2:
Continuation of blocking out main forms.
Short talk on form, space, composition, equivalence
Day 3:
Carving middle and small forms.
Beginning the detail. Anthony will explain how to sharpen tools and the selection of a tool kit, for beginners.

Day 4:
Resolution of form and detail.
Anthony will describe finishing techniques.

Materials and equipment:
•A choice of woods - seasoned and unseasoned are available for purchase from the tutor at cost.
•Carving equipment and tools are available for use during the course, but you are welcome to bring your own tools if preferred.
•Please wear comfortable clothing and substantial footwear.
•You may require sunglasses and a sun hat if the weather is sunny. There will be an opportunity to work outside if preferred.

Anthony Griffiths is a sculptor, a commercial woodcarver and a qualified teacher, with a wide experience in life modelling and life size figure carving. His work has been exhibited at the Beaux Arts gallery in Bath and in Gloucester Cathedral. He has also fulfilled commissions for the Houses of Parliament, Conock Manor, Devizes and for Highgrove, where he has created a pair of carved benches for HRH the Prince of Wales.
