Course programme
This course caters for those wishing to work in a variety of carpentry and joinery environments. Your time can be split between our own workshop and employment or work experience. Whilst in our workshop you will be involved in a variety of external contract work, as well as site maintenance. The training will include practical as well as theoretical work.
Course Content
The NVQ is made up of a number of units that will enable you to demonstrate competence in a variety of wood working activities including:
- Conform to general workplace safety
- Move and handle resources
- Install frames and linings
- Install side hung doors
- Install door ironmongery
- Install internal mouldings
These units enable you to develop the general skills required when working in a workshop environment as well as giving you specialised training.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements. An interest in practical activities, as well as enthusiasm and motivation are all that is needed. Previous hand tool experience is essential. To gain the full NVQ you will need to complete a set number of units. Each unit is assessed separately so that unit certificates may be awarded where necessary.
As you will be producing an end product, the quality of your work will be assessed by staff at the Centre. Also, much of the work you will be required to undertake will be for external customers and will have to meet their requirements and have to pass their quality standards. You will develop a portfolio of your work throughout the course to demonstrate your knowledge and skills.
This is a good starting point for entry into the building industry. We aim to provide a good introduction into the world of work and provide a link between school leavers and industry.
