Course programme

This programme is designed to take students with little or no experience and equip you with the fundamental skills of traditional woodland crafts.
The course will run in 2 and 3 day blocks over a period of five months. It is possible to camp on site when attending the course and there will be some evening work.
You will be expected to produce a small portfolio of evidence to complete the award.

Target Group

This indepth course has been designed as a stand alone qualification for anyone with an interest in woodland crafts, either as an occupation or for general study. We anticipate it will be a natural extension of skills especially to those already teaching bushcraft as well as those interested in pursuing a woodland career.

Content

The programme has been designed to cover the skills of the modern woodsman/ coppice worker. We will explore in depth among others the following subjects:

  • Woodland Management systems
  • Felling and harvesting
  • Splitting and cleaving
  • Greenwood working
  • Charcoal burning
  • Hedge laying
  • Woodland crafts
  • Rustic furniture and features
  • Tool use and maintenance
  • Health and Safety

Accreditation

This entire qualification is accredited by the NCFE as a level three qualification. This means that the subjects mentioned above are taught and learned at an advanced level. The process of assessment and accreditation is run by the NCFE who are responsible for the quality assurance and control.

Certification

The course leads to an NCFE level 3 qualification in 'Wood Crafts' backed up by a Woodcraft School certification detailing the exact content of the course programme.

Woodcraft School is an accredited NCFE Centre and head instructor, John Rhyder has written several totally new and bespoke qualifications for bushcraft (see our other courses) that are not available anywhere else in the country. NCFE are perhaps the oldest organisation of their kind in the country operating in the same way as other awarding bodies such as City and Guilds etc.

Progression

Successful candidates could use the qualification for continued professional development or progress.
