About this course
While a sound secondary education and related qualifications are desirable, acceptance will depend upon the outcomes of a successful interview and initial guidance. Applications from mature students are welcomed. Those wishing to join the C'Skills programmes will also need to apply directly. Motivation and interest are key requirements.

What will I study? Practical craft skills Job knowledge and trade techniques How to read, interpret and work from construction drawings Calculate trade materials and costings Key Skills - Communication and Application of Number
What else will I do? Emergency First Aid Health and Safety Training Work Placement Abrasive Wheels awareness training Employment rights and responsibilities
How will I be assessed? Coursework is assessed by practical and theoretical assignments. Practical tasks set in the college workshop along with written assignments throughout the course.
What will I achieve? Depending on your particular programme and skills interest, you will have the opportunity to achieve: Foundation Construction Award / Diploma level 1 [tba] City & Guilds Basic Skill Certificate (6000 series) Key Skills Units Subsidiary Awards
What can I do afterwards? On successful achievement candidates can progress onto the NVQ level 2 and the Intermediate Construction Award / Diploma level 2 [tba] N.B. The NVQ can only be achieved by candidates with a "construction industry" work placement as site generated evidence is required.
Materials required: Basic tools will be provided; candidates are encouraged to start accumulating their own set of tools. Toe-capped boots are required at all times whilst working in the practical workshops.
Additional information about this course: Construction courses prepare candidates for industry; the construction industry is physically demanding and all candidates should be aware of this from the offset.
