This short, university credit bearing course will cover a wide range of concepts including vulnerability, safeguarding, disability, inequality, poverty, mental health and substance abuse. The module will also introduce you to the policy, legal and ethical perspectives surrounding vulnerability and teach you how to identify, assess and manage risk within frameworks and theories.
About this course
Be able to provide evidence of previous study at Level 5 or above in a related subject area including but not limited to health and social care, social work, health promotion or youth work
Be a health care professional with access to an environment where you will be able to apply your skills to achieve the individual module learning outcomes. This does not specifically need to be employment and could include voluntary work
If you are a registered nurse but do not have a degree qualification, once you’ve completed this module you could offset the 20 credits through recognised prior learning (RPL) towards our online BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies (Top-Up) degree. This would reduce the number of modules you would need to study and the total cost of the course.
Alternatively, if you are a health and social care practitioner you may wish to offset the 20 credits by progressing to the online BSc (Hons) Integrative Health and Social Care (Top-Up) degree.

Course programme
The ability to identify and work positively with vulnerable people is a core requirement within the health and social care arena. Managing and understanding the concepts of abuse, risk and vulnerability within both a historical and practical context is therefore a requirement. There is a duty to assess and protect vulnerable service users. Recent significant cases in the adult and child sectors have highlighted a lack of skills in identifying, assessing and managing risk.
In this module, students you will cover a wide range of concepts including vulnerability, safeguarding, disability, inequality, poverty, mental health and substance abuse. The module will also introduce you to the policy, legal and ethical perspectives surrounding vulnerability and teach you how to identify, assess and manage risk within frameworks and theories.
