Are you concerned about global poverty? What do you think about Eastern European workers coming here to escape poverty in their own countries? Do you think that the government should provide more overseas aid, and what happens to it when it is given? World Development A level will help you to develop an understanding of how these issues shape our livesWe believe the future of research lies in breaking down traditional barriers between academic disciplines so the bigger problems of the 21st century can be considered from human as well as physical perspectives. We have a number of interdisciplinary research themes, which fit closely with international research priorities.

AS Level - Theme 1: Development, Resources and Global Citizenship - Examines the impact of development upon the environment, with an emphasis upon understanding sustainability. - Theme 2: Poverty and Inequality - Investigates the causes and possible solutions to poverty. - The Portfolio (coursework) - Analysis of Development Issues includes an analysis of three articles in the national and international press based on key ideas from Theme 1, each up to 500 words, and a comparative essay of up to 1000 words based on key ideas from Theme 2. A Level, theme 3 is compulsory with one other chosen from themes 4, 5 or 6 - Theme 3 Perspectives of Development (compulsory module) - Development is a contested concept which is evolving over time. - Theme 4 Economic Development - Inequalities in economic development exist at global, national and local scales. - Theme 5 Political Development - World governance structures affect levels and rates of development. - Theme 6 Social Development - Investigates the complex inter-relationships between population and resources which affect development. - The Individual Report (coursework) - A report of up to 3000 words based on any theme in the specification. Students can choose a topic in an area of interest, which could be an issue affecting your local community or economy or something further afield.
