Worship Leading
The Worship Academy Worship Leading course is a part time course, taking place over 8 Saturdays over a year
As well as the accredited side of the course, there is an emphasis placed upon your own relationship with God, and developing that relationship that you may develop as someone who truly knows and seeks God, and that you develop as a servant of Christ.
In addition to the Worship Leading qualification, students who complete the units are also eligible for the OCN Level 2 award for progression.
The course consist of 4 separate units:
Musical Skills for the Worship Leader
Worship Leading Skills
Theology Of Praise and Worship
Leadership
Musical Skills for the Worship Leader: Intermediate Grade
This unit is aimed at developing you musical skills and understanding of music. It looks at how to use your instrument in worship, how music works, understanding how other instruments work, and how to better your own skills on your instrument so that you can understand how to use music to create worship. Most of what you learn will then be put into action as the class works together as a worship team.
There are four specific sections of the unit:
i) intermediate music theory
ii) intermediate music techniques
iii) intermediate rhythm techniques
iv) improvisation techniques
The level of musicianship which we will be working towards is the equivalent of grades 3-5
Worship Leading Skills
This unit looks specifically at how to lead worship within your church. It covers the practical application and issues of leading worship.
You will work together with your group over the course and host a worship event at the end of the course.
There are four specific sections of the unit:
i) The role of the worship leader
ii) Worship in the 21st Century church
iii) Personal and spiritual development
iv) Hosting worship events
Theology of Praise and Worship
Although practical skills are vital to effectively lead worship, it is more important still to develop who you are as a person and a worship leader and to have a true understanding of what worship is.
The unit covers how worship was used in the Bible through to its' modern day application.
Developing Leadership Skills
There are two parts of being a worship leader, being a worshiper, and being a leader. This unit covers how to effectively lead a team of people in your church, and how leadership works spiritually.
Evidence for accreditation
The course consists of both practical and written elements. The course is designed to encourage your development as a worship leader, which means that large chunks of what we do will be working practically with each class developing as a worship team.
However, there will also be 2 written assignments of up to 3000 words each, which need to be completed over the year. The rest of the evidence will be made up from practical work and assignments.
Costs
You can complete the course either formally or informally. To enter informally, the course is free, however you will not be able to receive the official OCN qualification at the end of the course, although you will still have learned the same skills and covered the same work. You can still enter the required coursework, but this again will not be externally marked or accredited.
If you want to complete the course formally, there is a £100 charge to help to cover OCN fees. For formal accreditation you will have to complete the assignments over the year and produce the required evidence.
