Writing Commentary

This 3-day course is aimed at directors, producers, assistant producers and researchers who need to increase their skills to include writing commentary for documentary and factual programmes.

In brief, the course covers:

  • Different types of programmes which require specific commentaries to be written
  • The technical knowledge needed including timing
  • The effect required to be created by the choice of words and how they are delivered
  • Form and style
  • Types of voice - tone, accent and effect

Those attending will be given a series of writing exercises which can then be recorded using their own voices, or others, in order to analyse, compare and contrast the different nuances created.

Homework is expected on Days 1 and 2 of the course.
