Overview
This course is designed to assist operators new to OS/390 (MVS), who may have knowledge of other operating systems. It will provide formal tuition in the basic concepts of OS/390 and the facilities provided to control and operate the system on a day-to-day basis.

Course objectives
To present to attendees the various facilities and controls available with OS/390 in order that they may, with confidence, operate an OS/390 JES2 system.

By the end of this course you will have learned
The basic operator tasks involved in preparing the system for work; in managing system resources and the jobs which use the resources; how to correctly diagnose and correct the more common errors .

Course synopsis
  • The OS/390 System
  • An overview of OS/390 explaining the basic concepts of virtual storage, system components, datasets and the use of address spaces.
  • Job Management
  • Definition of a job. Job submission and processing by JES2. A brief look at JCL, procedures, started tasks and TSO users.
  • Console Management
  • The console configuration; master console, hardcopy console and secondary consoles. Limiting authority and message display. Customising console displays.
  • Controlling the System
  • System initialisation, modifying system parameters, quiescing and stopping the system. Allocating and controlling devices. Use of system restart facility, recording system information and error recovery.
  • System Commands
  • A description of the system commands.
  • JES2 Commands
  • A description of JES2 commands. Discussion of spool offload/reload.
  • RJE and NJE
  • Introduction to remote and network resources. Commands to control RJE lines, remote stations and devices. Commands to control an NJE job entry network.
  • Problem Diagnosis
  • Guidance in diagnostic approach. How to recognise a problem with devices, jobs or system components. Getting the evidence and attempting rectification.
