This course offers you a glimpse into the Classical World. You will study Classical Greek and Roman architecture, art, culture, history, literature, philosophy and religion.
AS Level (year one)
Unit One: CIV 1 Examination in January
THEME: GREEK ARCHITECTURE AND SCULPTURE (CIV1A)ORATHENIAN DEMOCRACY (CIV1B)
In this unit, you will critically study the significant aspects of the development of Greek public buildings and the development of free standing and architectural sculpture in the sixth, fifth and fourth centuries BCE. You will examine temple sites, statues, sculptures and grave monuments. Alternatively, you will examine the political development of Athens in the sixth and fifth centuries BCE and the way democracy operated in the second half of the fifth century BCE. This unit will involve the critical analysis of texts.
Unit Two: CIV 2 Examination in June
THEME: HOMER ILIAD(CIV2A)
The Iliadis a powerful, beautiful, and awe-inspiring work of Ancient Greece. This unit gives you the opportunity to critically study this most important of literary texts.
A Level (year two)
Unit Three: CIV 3
THEME: MYCENAEAN CIVILISATION (CIV3A)ORTHE PERSIAN WARS (CIV3B)
You will undertake a critical study of the value and limitations of archaeological evidence in understanding the nature and development of Mycenaean society and culture. Alternatively, you will study the Persian Wars.
Unit Four: CIV 4
THEME: SOCRATES and ATHENS (CIV4A)
In this unit you will undertake a critical study of Socrates philosophical interests and methods in their intellectual, religious, political, social and cultural context.
How you will learn
You will be taught through lecture, discussion, group work, video and field trips. Your skills in presenting arguments and using literary, archaeological and historical sources will be developed.

Examination.
