What's it all about?:
An understanding of financial statements and figures has to be the most important function in any business. On our foundation degree, you will get every opportunity to develop your enquiring mind and investigative nature as you probe through accounts, and uncover a wealth of information about financial activity to understand how businesses and their competitors operate. You will also get to put your new-found skills into practice in the real world before you graduate.

Progression:
On successful completion you may progress to:
  • the final year of the BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance degree at the University of Plymouth
  • the final year of the BA (Hons) Business Administration degree at the University of Plymouth
  • the second year of other business related degree programmes at the University of Plymouth
  • final year business degree programmes at a range of universities
  • a wide range of careers in business, management, personnel, marketing, finance, accounting and public administration.


Entry Requirements:
In our experience in order to be successful on this course you will normally need one of the following:
  • 60-120 UCAS tariff points - any combination
  • a BTEC national award
  • an NVQ Level 3
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience

What does the course involve?:

The programme consists of the following modules:

Year 1
  • Managing financial information - develop an understanding of systems for accessing financial information.
  • Professional accounting - key aspects of financial accounting.
  • Business environment - national and European business environment.
  • Marketing - the basic principles of marketing and their application in a business context.
  • Personal and professional development - to assist you in achieving the level of professional skills demanded by the course and your potential employers.
  • Organisational behaviour - considers how organisational behaviour and attitude influence the behaviour of individuals and groups at work.
  • English business law - develops essential knowledge and skills relating to key aspects of law impacting business.
  • Work-based learning - enables you to investigate issues relating to real work environments.

Year 2
  • Financial accounting - develops knowledge and understanding of financial systems.
  • Management accounting for decision making - develops a critical evaluation of costing information required by businesses to facilitate decision making.
  • Financial planning - examines the financial and budgetary planning used by organisations.
  • Business strategy - develops the theory and practice of strategic planning and includes an emphasis on the practical application of planning modules.
  • Business economics - examines contemporary economic issues affecting organisations.
  • Research skills - acquiring skills and knowledge to undertake a research project.
  • Statistics for accounting - develops an understanding of how statistical techniques assist the evaluation of financial data.
