This e-learning course, Acquired Brain Injury Awareness, has been developed in association with the British Institute of Disabilities (BILD) and Voyage Care. It is broken down into four easy-to-follow units – an introduction and three study units. The aim of the course is to raise awareness of acquired brain injuries (ABIs) – what they are, possible causes and the impact they can have on people, their families and friends. By gaining a better understanding of the implications of ABIs, learners will be able to provide more effective support to the people in their care.

Course programme

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is injury to the brain, which can result in complex disabilities that often have a dramatic impact on the person's life. Changes may be short term or long term and affect emotions, behavior and personality. ABI often has real consequences for the social life of the survivor and for their families.

There is a real need for basic awareness training on the subject of ABI. In order to plan and deliver appropriate services, managers, practitioners and others need to understand how ABI affects the individual and those around them. By developing an understanding of the ABI those involved in the planning and delivery of all sorts of services will be better placed to meet the needs of survivors of ABI and their carers.

This elearning course addresses the key topics of :

  • Causes and effects of ABI
  • Treatment and rehabilitation
  • Strategies for managing psychological and social effects of ABI
  • Issues for service providers including Mental Capacity and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
  • Personalisation and self directed support
