Acquired / Traumatic Brain Injury

The term Acquired Brain Injury can be used to describe situations whereby a brain injury has occurred since birth including tumours, stroke and conditions such as encephalitis. Traumatic Brain Injury covers any injury caused to the brain during trauma for example during a road traffic accident.

Statistics from Headway suggest that 1 million people are admitted to hospital each year with a suspected brain injury - of these 186,000 cases are confirmed. About 6% of confirmed cases are severely injured and as such are likely to have long-term problems and require rehabilitation.

Personal Care Consultants delivers a one day course in Acquired or Traumatic Brain Injury. Our one day course enables practitioners to develop knowledge and understanding of Acquired/Traumatic Brain Injury and covers the learning outcomes below.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course participants should have:

• Considered an introduction to understanding the physiology of the brain
• Explored the effect and severity of brain injury
• Developed an understanding of the physical and sensory problems that can develop following a traumatic brain injury
• Considered the possible impact on the person who receives the injury, their partner, children, extended family, friends and others
• Explored aspects of professional assessments and redeveloping skills
• The course is accompanied by a comprehensive handout which acts as a valuable tool for future reference and includes exercises for trainees to complete which documents their learning.

By the end of the Two Day course trainees with have achieved the Learning
Outcomes of the One Day course above and will also have:

• Explored aspects of professional assessments and redeveloping skills
• Considered the skills in working with individuals with TBI
• Developed knowledge of the legal process, including aspects of mental capacity and the role of the court of protection
• Considered resources related to TBI
