Modules are designed to develop a student's understanding of the techniques and approaches to acting, performance and production, based on professional theatre practice, and linked to their ability to demonstrate these in a variety of contexts and styles.

Teaching and learning methods are designed to demonstrate the Award's commitment to providing a high quality learning environment for students. The Award has strategies for teaching and learning with Level and individual module learning outcomes There is extensive team teaching throughout the Award involving both the Drama staff and visiting professional theatre practitioners.

Workshops develop acting, vocal and communication skills, and include exercises in improvisation, relaxation and confidence building, as well as tuition in particular performance techniques, technical and production roles. Alternatively, they may be used for exploration of a text or to demonstrate particular skills such as directing.

Staff and student led rehearsals are appropriate for developing work for presentations and public performances, and for exploring a text in more detail. Experiential inquiry-based learning also inculcates an understanding of professional disciplines which can be subsequently applied to the world of work.
Performances are used as both summative and formative assessments which aim to be as rigorous as formal examinations. Performances and presentations are designed to develop students to the point where they are capable of independently staging and performing a complex, full-length theatre production by the end of their studies.

Drama staff use lectures in a variety of ways in relation to both practical and academic work: for example, not only are lectures used to set out areas of theatre history, key theories and practitioners, set texts and to provide historical context, but they are also used to introduce and explain technical disciplines of staging practical work. Within lectures a range of strategies or technologies may be used: for example, screenings of extracts from plays, audio-visual material from primary or secondary sources. Students are encouraged to engage in group and individual learning across both practical and academic work. Theatre visits enable shared discussion and analysis.
