Course Summary:
The Sports Science and Advanced Research study programme is a two-year course designed to develop the skills and knowledge base of learners with a keen interest in the science of sport.
It consists of the 90-credit Diploma studied in Year 1 and the Extended Diploma completed in Year 2. Learners will study in both practical and theoretical settings. This is an ideal pathway for learners wishing to advance their studies at university.
Entry requirements
Learners will need to complete an interview and screening test in maths and English.
The entry requirements for this course are five GCSEs graded at between 9-6 including Maths and English. Any achievement in BTEC Sport qualifications at Level 2 will only be considered if at a Merit or Distinction grade.

Course programme

Course Content: The course enables learners to understand advanced concepts in areas such as physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology and sports analysis. The first year is made up of nine units which may include: Anatomy Psychology Physiology Fitness Testing Research Methods Practical Sport Exercise, Health and Lifestyle The course will also include a work placement, tutorial and the development of English and maths skills to support your main programme of study, help your future progression and enhance your life skills. How will I be assessed? You will build a portfolio based around evidence generated by the various assessment methods in each unit. Learners are expected to work on multiple assessments at any one time. You can expect to be assessed through: practical demonstration logbooks and performance records written reports and essays presentations workbooks discussions and vivas Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required? The course requires a kit to be purchased. The cost of this will be finalised at the start of the course but is expected to be in the region of £140. This will include yearly gym membership and the end-of-year celebration event. This money should be received before November. There may also be additional costs incurred for selected trips or visits. What can I do after this course? Further study On successful completion, the course provides an excellent platform for progression to the: Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science (Year 2) Leadership and Teamwork for the Public Services course Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science Diploma in Sports Massage It is an ideal pathway for those seeking to study at university level. Careers You may also wish to seek paid or voluntary employment in the sports and active leisure industry. You do not, of course, have to enter the sport and active leisure industry as the skills gained on the course are transferable to a wider range of job areas.
