Course Content

The BA English and French is a joint degree and therefore your studies will be divided equally between the two subjects. As a joint student, you will take three core English first year modules: English Landmark Texts, Introduction to Renaissance Literature and Introduction to Literary Studies. Students usually take three modules in French (including core language and culture) and three in English. French culture modules focus on themes such as social and cultural ‘revolution’ and France at war as well as French art and film.

You can choose English modules up to 60 credits (half your total workload) in each of your second and final years. The only set requirement is that every student studies some pre-1800 and some post-1800 literary modules as an English programme requires coverage of the full range of literary history.

The third year of the course is spent in France. The Year Abroad will probably be one of the most exciting and challenging experiences you will ever have. You will notice a dramatic improvement in your spoken language, giving you greater confidence and more mature insights into the life of your chosen country. The 'year', incidentally, is an 'academic year' and means at least eight months spent abroad. Students can choose to study at an exchange partner university, work in a school as a language assistant or work in industry or commerce.
