Content and Structure
The Tourism Management scheme is a combination of tourism and business modules, with a range of option modules that allow you to tailor your studies towards your specific career choice.
Year one study includes modules that focus on the world tourism industry, recreation and tourism in the UK, a modern European language, an introduction to financial management, the principles of marketing and economic principles.
In year two you will take a range of modules including the development of international tourism, rural tourism, marketing strategy, marketing management and research skills. In addition, there is a range of option modules to choose from including human resources and an overseas study tour. There is also the opportunity to undertake a short period of work experience.
The final year includes modules on sustainable tourism, tourism marketing management, visitor attractions, strategic planning for tourism and recreation, marketing communications and a dissertation. There are also a number of option modules to choose from, including business strategy and seminar topics.
Teaching and Learning
This is through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and study visits. There is an opportunity to take part in a study tour in the first and second years; the one in the second year involving an intensive study of tourism in an overseas destination. Additionally, you can participate in an exchange programme with a university overseas as part of your studies.
Assessment is by coursework and examinations, which are designed to be relevant to the needs of the tourism industry. Continuous assessment includes writing reports, completing surveys, making presentations, discussing case studies and contributing to 'live' tourism industry projects.
