2. Course description You will look at how the law is made and who makes the law how the criminal and civil legal systems work and look in detail at the criminal law. In addition studying law will help you to develop your problem solving skills and your written communication skills.The BTEC course in first year is divided into three units.Unit one looks at the civil and criminal court systems and how they work. Unit two looks at how laws are made by Parliament and other institutions and how those laws are interpreted by Judges. Unit three is an introduction to civil and criminal liability and looks at the criminal law with reference to the law relating to assaults and civil law with reference to the tort of negligence.The second year for the course is also divided into three Units. Unit four looks at the law of homicide and you will study the law relating to murder and manslaughter and you will also look at the police powers of arrest and detention of criminal suspects. Unit five looks at another aspect of criminal law as it considers offences against property such as theft robbery burglary and fraud. You will also learn about the police powers to search premises and seize property. Unit six is an introduction to contract law and looks at how contracts are made what the standard terms of a contract are and the remedies available for breach of contract.
