Why should I study Travel & Tourism at Cardinal Newman College?
We have a strong department offering high quality teaching and support with a history of excellent achievement. Throughout the course, the department aims to offer experience of the vocational nature of the travel industry, by taking several visits in the UK and in Europe.
Our Travel and Tourism Department was recently given the accolade as the Best in the Country in a national survey.
What will I study?BTEC National Certificate
You will study six units in the first year and six units in the second year.
In the first year you'll study:
· Investigating travel and tourism
· The business of travel and tourism
· Travel destinations: the UK
· Customer service in travel and tourism
· Travel and tourism
· Current issues in travel and tourism
In the second year you'll study:
· Working in travel and tourism
· Travel and tourism project
· Overseas destination study
· Impacts of tourism
· Roles and responsibilities of holiday reps
· Specialist interest/activity holidays
This is a consecutive two year course totaling twelve units, six in the first year and six in the second. Assessment is 100% coursework.
BTEC National Diploma
This is a two year full time course - the units studied are the same as the BTEC National Certificate plus a further six, making the qualification equivalent to a three A Level programme. There are nine units in each year and all 18 units are assessed by a variety of coursework projects.
The additional units covered could include:
· Entertainment for holidaymakers
· Planning tourism events
· Handling air passengers
· Working in the cruise industry
· Retail travel operations
· Preparing for employment in travel and tourism
What can I study with this subject?
Any Humanities or Social Science, but if you have an interest in the subject you do not have to pick anything specifically to complement this subject. We have a range of students who study this subject including those who are taking subjects such as Drama & Theatre Studies, Geography, Sociology, English or Music.
Progression
Many students who study Travel & Tourism go on either to complete a degree in a relevant area such as international tourism management, tourism marketing, customer service to a hospitality related degree, or go directly into employment working as a travel representative, travel agent or working within the airline industry.
