Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering, Level 1

Course overview Are you passionate about the hair industry? Do you read fashion magazines in search of the latest hair trends or style disasters? Can you see yourself as a hairdresser? Whether you are thinking of becoming a mobile stylist or dream of owning your own salon, our Level 1 National Vocational Qualification will introduce you to the world of hairdressing and provide you with the skills and training you need to develop a great career in the field. Our one-year course offers a hands-on approach that balances basic theory with some great practical experience to give you the best possible start in the industry. Our course offers a full-time programme of study lasting one year. Within this period you will learn about both the theory and practice of hairdressing. At our on-site salons Fountains and Fusion, which are both open to the public, you will have the opportunity to learn how to shampoo and condition, plait, twist and dress hair, as well as carrying out reception duties and promoting products to clients. You will also assist with colouring and perming services, and learn how to prepare and maintain work areas for Level 2 and 3 students. In addition to practical training, you will also study an extra qualification called Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing Services. This qualification teaches you about different areas of hairdressing including scalp massage, hair colouring, displaying products in a salon, and even makeup and nail art! During this time, you will also make a folder of your creative work to cover areas such as client consultation and health and safety practice. These will be examples of your work that you can take to interviews to help you get work. You will also have the opportunity to visit exhibitions, including Salon International, and participate in shows and events that we hold at the College.  Entry requirements You will need a reasonable standard of GCSEs in different subjects, including at least a D in English. You will also be creative and have a real interest in the industry. Before your interview, we will invite you to visit Fountains Salon to experience the salon as a customer and see how we work.
