Cognitive Linguistics is a modern and innovative approach to the study of language and mind, and their relationship with embodied experience and culture. The MA provides a focused and comprehensive programme of graduate level training in the core subject matter of Cognitive Linguistics, including the most important theoretical frameworks. The subject matter covered includes conceptual structure and organisation, figurative language, grammar and mind, the relationship between language, thought and culture, lexical and cognitive compositional semantics, the issue of embodiment, and contemporary methodology in Cognitive Linguistics. The MA also provides a platform for those interested in pursuing an advanced research degree such as a PhD.

About this course


The course aims to enable understudies to: Students will demonstrate an advanced, research level, knowledge of the various concepts and principles used in Cognitive Linguistic analyses, particularly when applied to grammatical analysis.

Students will understand the differences between Cognitive Linguistics and other approaches to linguistic analysis.

Students will be able to produce Cognitive Linguistic analyses of a range of phenomena.

Students will be able to form a critical understanding of a range of primary texts in journals and monographs that take a Cognitive Linguistic approach to language.

Students will be able to plan and conduct original research in this area of study.

2(ii) undergraduate degree normally required.

Applicants who do not speak English as their native language must pass the IELTS English test with a score of 6.0 (with no element below 5.5).
