Dementia Care

This course starts by looking at the neuropathology of Alzheimer’s disease, the stages and the clinical presentation of Alzheimer’s. Vascular Dementias are explored including multi-infarct dementia. Other dementias discussed include Lewy body, CJD and Korsakoffs Psychosis. Treatment options including different types of medication is included. Nutritional requirements of this group of people are discussed as well as recommendations for feeding and including meals as a therapeutic activity. Communication is covered including, non-verbal communication. Continence is discussed looking at the reasons for incontinence and possible at solutions. Activity and play are considered in terms of, how can these be integrated into the daily regime in the home.
