Course programme

Economics: AS and A2 Level
This course will help you understand how markets and businesses work efficiently, what can prevent their efficient operation, and how the British and world economies operate.

Course details
There are four units covering the operation and failure of markets, managing the economy, the economics of business and the global economy. You will develop a range of data analysis, presentation and problem-solving skills to enable you to look at the world through an economist's eyes.

How is it assessed?
Each year is assessed by two exams, totalling 3 hours for the AS, and a further 3.5 hours for the A2. You can pay to resit exams in order to improve your mark. You will also complete a number of formal internal assessments to test your knowledge and skills, which do not go towards your final mark.

Course duration
One year at AS level. One year at A2 level.

What do I need to study this subject?
You should have five GCSE grades A*-C, including English Language and an A*-B in Mathematics. You will need to pass the AS in order to progress onto the A2.

Where can this lead me?
A levels will provide access to careers in management, industry and most professions, or HND level study and degrees such as finance, business, marketing, management and accountancy.

What are the enrichment opportunities?
We run a series of economics masterclasses with our partner Queen Mary University . We also may visit economic institutions in London and elsewhere to find out how economic policy is made and markets operate. Our students also attend economics conferences with talks from examiners and economists in order to gain deeper insights into the subject, and to maximise examination success.
