WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The degree commences with a fundamental study of electrical and electronic engineering. This helps ensure that students from many different backgrounds are prepared for a detailed study of electronics.

You will continue to study electronics and be introduced to some of its specialist application areas in the second year. Subjects include Engineering Management, Communications Systems, and an Embedded Microprocessors Group Project.

The final year balances study between advanced electronics techniques, the main application areas for electronics and project work that will take you to the level of a professional engineer working in the electronics industry. Your individual project will see you working closely with your own academic supervisor to develop research aspects of electronic systems.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your study will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars, laboratory practical classes and personal tutorials. In addition, your personal tutor will meet with you weekly during the first year and assist with your transition to studying in higher education.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 40%; coursework, tests, essays 25%; practical or project work 20%; group work etc. 10%; presentations, posters etc. 5%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical teaching week you will have up to 20 contact hours of study (classroom, laboratory etc) and this breaks down as follows:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 2 hours of tutorials (or later, individual project supervision) each week

Medium group teaching: 8 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week

Large group teaching: 10 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 20 hours each week studying in your own time
