English Literature offers you the opportunity to develop your passion and enjoyment of reading We study a large range of exciting literature from across the ages and will support you in learning to critically analyse texts The course will introduce you to critical concepts, new approaches and a wide range of new terminology to aid in forming your own independent interpretations of literature

What will I learn?UNIT 1: ASPECTS OF TRAGEDY
We will study three texts: one Shakespeare play (Othello - William Shakespeare), a second drama text (A Streetcar Named Desire - Tennessee Williams) and pre-1900 prose (Tess of the D'Urbervilles - Thomas Hardy) We will explore the origin, development and application of tragedy across these texts
UNIT 2: TEXTS AND GENRES - ELEMENTS OF CRIME WRITING
We will study three texts: one post-2000 prose text, one poetry and one further text, one of which must be written pre-1900 We will also learn to respond to an unseen passage in the exam
UNIT 3: THEORY AND INDEPENDENCE - COURSEWORK
We will explore, analyse and evaluate two different literary texts (of your choosing); however, one of the texts must be poetry and the other must be prose Each text must be linked to a different section of the Critical Anthology (Feminist theory, Marxist theory and Post-colonial theory) You will have the opportunity to write two essays on these texts - one of these will be a re-creative piece
How will I be assessed?You will be assessed mostly by examination (80%) as well as one non-exam component (20%) You will sit two different papers One on Aspects of Tragedy and the other on Elements of Crime Writing The non-examined element is internally assessed
What may it lead to?A-Level English Literature can benefit a variety of academic and career directions Many students choose to study English at university to access careers in journalism, teaching or business It is also a qualification that is highly respected by universities and, therefore, supports students seeking to progress to many competitive university courses The strong analytical and communication skills gained also support students in entering a number of professions
Entry RequirementsSuccessful applicants will need GCSE English Language at grade B or above, and four other GCSEs at grade C or above
