Foundation Diploma in Caring for Children (QCF) - Level 1 Overview

This is a Level 1 course that will develop your skills and knowledge in preparation for a career within childcare.

A work placement opportunity may be available as part of this course. Please note - you will be required to have a CRB check that you will fund prior to undertaking a placement.

Entry requirements
  • English language OR maths at D grade and three E grades at GCSE which must include English language or:
  • Entry Level 3 in Caring for Children
  • You will be required to undertake a DBS check that the college will fund prior to any placement. Any reprimands, cautions, warnings, convictions or ASBOs may affect your chances of securing a work placement

You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You will also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by a range of methods to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the subjects studied.

What does the course lead to?

Upon successful completion you could progress to the Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce or other related Level 2 courses available at the college.

You could also gain employment as an assistant in an early years care setting.

What will I study?

You will study a range of units that will prepare you to care for children.

You will also study Functional Skills in ICT, English and Maths at a level appropriate for you.

Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
