Electronics AS/A2
Electronics is one of the technologies that has had a major impact on our life in the 21st Century. This course allows you to explore the technology behind the modern information age. Electronics make a useful companion subject for students who want to continue further study of Physics, Chemistry or Engineering or who are interested in a career in electronics, communications or computing.

There will be an emphasis on practical work to support theory, with access to specialist equipment and facilities.

What will I study?
Throughout the course you will cover all the basic aspects of digital and analogue electronics and learn to use industry standard design tools. Topics include areas such as mobile communications, microprocessors and control systems.

AS: In the first year you will learn how to design and build electronic circuits, and cover the underpinning theoretical knowledge of the subject. You will also undertake a coursework project requiring you to design, build and test a piece of electronic equipment such as a burglar alarm or a guitar amplifier. You will also make use of software simulation to assist in the design procedure.

A2: The second year develops the skills and knowledge from AS, and looks in detail at electronic control systems and communications systems. You will produce a coursework project involving the design, building and testing of a more complex piece of electronic equipment such as a microprocessor control system for a miniature robot.

How will I be assessed?
AS: 2 written exams at the end of year one, plus coursework project.

A2: 2 written exams at the end of year two, plus coursework project.

What can I do next?
Electronics is a good basis for further study of Physics, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, and for employment in engineering, communications or in technical areas of the media or IT.
